Bruise Treatment in Your Daycare Home
Bruise treatment is a common minor injury (and it is bound to happen sooner- or- later!) that may produce a noticeable bump, you will want to follow this treatment immediately to reduce the swelling and the black and blue mark! A Hurt Child will require treatment.
FIRST THINGS FIRST-
Always be sure to notify the parents of all injuries in your child care home and call 911 for severe injuries!!!
Next:
- You will want to apply ice for about 15 minutes at a time- this can be very difficult with little kids- especially when it is a bump on the head, but it is the first step in bruise treatment. Be sure that you always put something between the ice and their skin- such has a small towel, wash cloth, pillow case or small blanket. (If it is their blanket it will provide more comfort for them). Later on in the treatment watch for Infant Fever that could be a sign of something more serious!
- You will want to continue with icing the area periodically throughout the day while the child is in your care, then suggest to the parents that they ice the area on and off for the first 24-48 hours.
- Try to elevate the area above their heart if the child will cooperate in doing so.
But what else can you do?
- For pain- with written permission from the parents, a child could take acetaminophen (Tylenol) - they may especially need this for a bump on the head. Be sure to avoid aspirin or ibuprofen (name brand of Motrin or Advil). They are not recommended for treatment because they can actually prolong bleeding.
- After a couple of days and the bruise has developed, you could apply a warm wash cloth to the area several times a day (this usually feels really good on a bump on the head and little kids don’t seem to mind it! It is comforting treatment that will promote healing.
- Be sure to reassure parents (especially if this is their first child) that their pain and the tenderness should get better within a few days. The bruising should go away within a couple of weeks.
Parents should call a doctor when:
- The child’s bruise is accompanied by extreme pain and swelling. The child may cry excessively and most likely will not want you or the parent to even look at it, let alone touch it.
- A bruise just shows up on their skin for no reason at all.
