Childhood Obesity Facts... Why You should pay attention to the effects of Childhood obesity.

Obesity facts should not be ignored by parents OR by child care providers. We know we live in a country which seems to promote children to be sedentary and eat poorly, which leads to them putting on unnecessary weight. Look at all of advertisements for video and computer games as well as all of the junk food!

It's no wonder the childhood obesity statistics are startling! Did you know that kids'(age 6 to 11) obesity rate has more than doubled in the past 20 years, going from 6.5% in 1980 to 17.0% in 2006?

It gets even worse! The obesity rate among adolescents (ages 12 to 19) more than TRIPLED- increasing from 5% to 17%! Don't you agree that these are scary childhood obesity facts!

Here is a note that I have a hard time agreeing with- Experts are suggesting that daycare providers set up "learning centers" outside and removing our playground equipment...

What happened to swinging, sliding, climbing, running, exploring, jumping, kicking, PLAYING, etc? Granted, some playgrounds do in fact pose serious safety hazards- (I am not promoting this) and the experts are trying to avoid injuries. But it seems that everyone I have a conversation with on this feel the same way I do. We all managed to survive our childhood, where there was equipment that was down right dangerous!!

I am NOT promoting this either!

I guess what I am trying to say is this; We were outside more than inside, getting that exercise through that kind of play- We didn't need to set up a "learning center". The outdoors, the playground, the world was our learning center. And guess what? Childhood obesity facts were far less gloomy than they are now.

What's really sad is how the effects of childhood obesity can affect children into adulthood.

Take a look at these following health risk factors.

They are:

  2. - Possibility of cardiovascular/heart disease and high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure.
  3. - Possibility of developing type 2 diabetes
  4. - Possibility of developing certain types of cancer.
  5. - Stroke risk
  6. - Possibility of bone or joint problems
  7. - Possibility of sleep apnea
  8. - Possibility of arthritis
  9. - Possibility of poor self-esteem (and social problems)
